WATER MANAGEMENT IN ROMANIA

Witteveen+Bos is currently involved in several projects in Romania regarding water management. In these projects Witteveen+Bos experts assist national and local governmental water managers in decision making processes regarding water quantity and water quality.

For the Water Directorate of Somes-Tisa (one of the river basin based water boards in Romania) and the National Administration Apele Româna (ANAR), a program of measures has been developed for a pilot in a mining area in the northern region of Baia Mare. Due to intensive mining activities in the past, the water quality on the surface is strongly influenced in this area.

First, the ecological objectives for these rivers were derived from comparable not-influenced rivers in Romania. Second, possible measures were defined and their effects and costs were estimated. A cost-benefit package of measures will be defined in a Public Participation and Consultation process (PPC) in 2008, together with the selected stakeholders.
