STATION IN THE CITY OF DELFT

The present elevated railway track through the center of the historic city of Delft will be replaced by a four-lane railway tunnel combined with an underground station.

This creates the possibility for aboveground redevelopment of a strategic site for multiple purposes (public transport, housing, offices, city hall, recreation, water management). Witteveen+Bos has been involved in the project since 2003, providing the clients (municipality of Delft and railway authority ProRail) with consultancy services on a wide range of subjects (technical design, costs management, contracting and general project management).

The fire safety design of the railway tunnels and underground station is of vital importance to this project. Extensive research was carried out regarding the structural design, the evacuation design and incident management. In close co-operation with local emergency services several risk (quantitative and scenario) analyses were carried out, taking into account diverse events such as explosions, train fires, loss of containment of dangerous railway freight and derailment risks. Within the constraints and regulations for aboveground spatial planning, an adequate fire-safety design for both tunnel and station have been realised.
