SITE SURVEY OF JäRPEN INDUSTRIAL SITE, SWEDEN

Tyréns has carried out site investigations, environmental and health based risk assessments and remedial investigations. The main contamination problem was the residue from the sulphate factory, pyrite ashes with a high content of heavy metals, which where found in large volumes. The scope of the project was to find the optimal combination of alternative remedial solutions in order to reduce the human exposure and transport of heavy metals to the nearby river. The assignment also included a liability inquiry.
The study of remediation measures was supported by Witteveen+Bos where a permeable reactive filter was an alternative. The final solution will be a combination of covering techniques, enclosure and filter techniques.
