Due to the poor drinking water quality of private wells (because of seawater intrusion), the number of water connections will be doubled in the next 25 years. As a consequence the water production also has to be doubled. The objective of this project is to develop alternative options to deliver these higher volumes to Norrtälje. At first an assessment was made of the rehabilitation cost of the existing Nanö Vattenverk surface water treatment plant.
Subsequently strategic options for higher supply volumes were elaborated on:
· increase of the existing surface water abstraction from Lake Erken
· surface water abstraction from another lake
· groundwater abstraction
· water supply from Stockholm using a transport pipe (to be constructed)
· seawater desalination at the Baltic Sea, and transport by pipeline
Finally, a multi-criteria analysis was used for ranking the alternatives. The Norrtälje city council selected the preferred alternative.
