GRAIN TERMINAL VENTSPILS, LATVIACommissioned by Ventspils Free Port Authority, Witteveen+Bos made lay-out alternatives, the final design and tender documents for loading platforms and mooring dolphins for a new grain terminal in the port of Ventspils.
In relation to dredging activities, which are necessary to accommodate Panamax vessels at the new terminal, the influence on the adjacent existing quay structure as well as the influence of the grain silos on the stability of the existing quay wall and underwater slopes were determined. Finally a costs analysis was made. Specific supervision has been carried out during the construction phase.
The existing quay wall turned out to be very unstable and required special attention during the design activities and the construction period. The design was dominated by the high ice loads induced by drifting ices in the harbour of Ventspils.
