The development area comprises a total development of some 200,000 m2 of office space and shopping areas. Because randomly positioned ATES systems on a small area can negatively influence each other, a key question of the municipality was how multiple ATES systems can be realised in a way that the greatest joint efficiency is realized.
To investigate this, two scenarios were investigated:
1) a collective ATES scenario involving one ATES system with multiple wells and
2) an organic growth ATES scenario where each separate company realises their own ATES system.
The main outcome of the study was that both systems are technically feasible, but the collective system is financially more attractive. Drawback of one collective system is that the investments and financial risks are carried by one organisation. Witteveen+Bos is currently working together with the municipality to involve local companies in the process of establishing.
